Uzwelo Bags is a Durban-based initiative that produces unique & stylish bags made of 100% recycled materials, otherwise destined for landfills.
Uzwelo is doing its part in the fight against single-use plastics — they manufacture a range of bags made entirely from rPET (recycled plastic bottles).
Each bag is totally one-of-a-kind, woven and manufactured exclusively within South Africa.
They employ 3 women from iBhungezi/Philangethemba Trust (Molweni-Valley of 100 hills), 3 ladies at the LIV Village, and 2 ladies from iThembalethu (Cato Manor) — Each of whom are contributing to sustainability and earning a living.
This contributes to education and skill-development for local communities, who are considered key stakeholders by the company.
To date Uzwelo has redirected over 86,000m2 of waste fabric from landfills.
They run a successful Schoolbag initiative in partnership with corporate SA to get schoolbags to rural children: so far this programme has delivered over 30,000 school bags to rural children.
Uzwelo also supports other meaningful initiatives and NPO’s:
They donate 5% of proceeds to The Bateleurs, a team using aerial means to shed light ecological challenges and combat environmental degradation.
